We know there is waste involved in feeding big round bales. In trials performed by college’s feeder waste ranged from 8% to 25% waste from livestock pulling hay out of the feeder and onto the ground from various types of bale feeders. Once it is on the ground it is stepped on and remains uneaten by the livestock. The following numbers are very conservative but will give you an idea of how much that feed waste is actually costing you.

- 30 lbs hay / cow / day
The math
- 100 head x 120 days x 30 lbs hay = 180 tons of hay
- 180 tons x 15%* waste = 27 tons
- 27 tons x $150 / ton = $4,050 in wasted hay
